Aside from the raw beauty of their ranch, it's the Miller family that makes the Watterson Experience special.
Roy and I were going to take roping lessons so we could compete together. As we began searching for clinics, etc., it just felt that Roy wouldn't be able to be here in Texas enough to practice like we would need to in order to succeed. So, we started looking at other team events we could do together. I also was looking for something else to add to my barrel horses' resumes. I had watched Ranch Sorting before and started talking to Roy about it. I had worked cattle plenty, but never in a competitive event, just out of necessity. Roy had chased plenty of foxes, but not cattle. I thought it would be fun, but wanted to go to an expert to get some advice before going to a competition.
Roy found Watterson Ranch online and emailed Trina. She invited us to come to their sorting and said to bring horses. I didn't want to. I didn't want to look stupid when I had never sorted before. But, Roy encouraged me to load up some horses, so we did. When we got to Watterson, it felt like I'd stepped out into an after church get together. I was greeted by each person I rode by. Trina welcomed us both face to face and over the loud speaker. Instead of feeling like ignorant novices, we felt like honored guests. I was amazed at the love I could feel all around that arena. This is not something I normally experienced at barrel races. It was a nice change. Everyone was whooping and hollering, cheering us on. We did the same for them. It was like we'd known these folks for years. Seasoned sorters took their turns taking Roy and I, one at a time, under their wing, offering tips as we sorted. I had been timid about bringing horses and instead left that evening having the best time on horseback that I'd had in a very long time. It was a BLAST! I couldn't wait to do it again.
As we came back week after week, we realized that the sorting IS fun, but the people at Watterson are what make it such a wonderful place to be. Scott and Trina will continue to be blessed with success because of what they give to others. I encourage you to come to one of their scheduled events. You will not be disappointed.
